Sadie Tierney is showing a new series of 14 prints alongside fellow Portsmouth based printmaker Chris Wood, and London based painter Edward Beale.

Sadie Tierney’s inspiration comes from the seafront playground of Clarence Parade and it’s landmarks old and new. The iconic Skyways Rollercoaster and the gleaming new Solent Wheel are worked in a series of monoprints, drypoints and lithographs against a backdrop of dramatic Solent skies….Impressionistic images of the Southsea funfair and the ferries that pass behind it have an almost childlike intensity and naivety.

Sadie Tierney and Chris Wood are members of the new collective, Fire Monkey Arts based at the newly opened Hotwalls Studios just down the road from us at Jack House Gallery.

Clarence Pier, drypoint, lithograph and hand colouring, 27x35cm, edition of 6

Wheel at Night (Sepia), mono print and hand colouring, 64x89cm

Tide & Time

In this new show of paintings, drawings and hand
made prints, Tierney takes inspiration from
the changing seascapes that surround the island
city of Portsmouth. Contemporary renditions of
steel ships, rollercoasters & other structures are
set against the sea and sky. Although working from
life, the artist is less concerned with accurate
depiction of objects, and more interested in
describing visual sensation & experience through
celebratory use of colour & line.

Included in the works made for the exhibition is
an edition of hand made screen prints, made available
here for the first time. In addition Tierney has made
a large painting of HMS Warrior on the wall adjoining
the gallery, which will remain in situ until the end
of the exhibition on March 25th.

artist’s progress here …

Exhibition continues until 25 March 2016,
opening times 10-6, Tues - Sat. Entrance -free,
all artwork for sale.

“Trapped in the Amber” by Sadie Tierney

“Here we are trapped in the amber of the moment. There is no why.” (Kurt Vonnegut)

In an era before smart phones a camera is left running at a party so guests can pick it up and film and perform. Presented here largely in slow motion with no sound, the artist uses a few minutes of real time and sound to define heightened clarity within the remembered event.

Digital Video, 1 hour, silent with 3 minutes of sound, looped.

Sadie Tierney is a graduate of the Royal College of Art. Solo exhibitions include Flowers East, Eton College and Rabley Contemporary.

New acquisition of my work by a major international art gallery.

The Bronx Museum of the Arts, one of New York’s largest public art galleries, has recently secured two of my paintings for their permanent collection. The two paintings ‘Ferry at Night’ and ‘Grand Canyon’ were previously held in a private collection, so this is the first time they will be available for the public to view.

The Bronx Museum of the Arts founded in 1971, is an internationally recognized cultural destination that presents innovative contemporary art exhibitions. More about the museum and program click here.

Ferry at Night, acrylic on paper, 34 x 77 cm

Grand Canyon, acrylic on board, 17 x 23 cm

Printing at Omega Print Workshop

February 11th, 2015

This week I’ve been making prints at Omega Printmakers, an open access print workshop in Portsmouth. The big attraction for me is the Rochat etching press, which is a dream to use. There’s a large Albion press too, and exposure unit/ screen beds.
