Sadie Tierney is showing a new series of 14 prints alongside fellow Portsmouth based printmaker Chris Wood, and London based painter Edward Beale.
Sadie Tierney’s inspiration comes from the seafront playground of Clarence Parade and it’s landmarks old and new. The iconic Skyways Rollercoaster and the gleaming new Solent Wheel are worked in a series of monoprints, drypoints and lithographs against a backdrop of dramatic Solent skies….Impressionistic images of the Southsea funfair and the ferries that pass behind it have an almost childlike intensity and naivety.

Sadie Tierney and Chris Wood are members of the new collective, Fire Monkey Arts based at the newly opened Hotwalls Studios just down the road from us at Jack House Gallery.
Portsmouth based artist Sadie Tierney’s solo
exhibition Tide & Time is currently at Play Dead Gallery
in Southsea until March 25 2016.

Tide & Time In this new show of paintings, drawings and hand
made prints, Tierney takes inspiration from
the changing seascapes that surround the island
city of Portsmouth. Contemporary renditions of
steel ships, rollercoasters & other structures are
set against the sea and sky. Although working from
life, the artist is less concerned with accurate
depiction of objects, and more interested in
describing visual sensation & experience through
celebratory use of colour & line.
Included in the works made for the exhibition is
an edition of hand made screen prints, made available
here for the first time. In addition Tierney has made
a large painting of HMS Warrior on the wall adjoining
the gallery, which will remain in situ until the end
of the exhibition on March 25th.

“Trapped in the Amber” by Sadie Tierney
“Here we are trapped in the amber of the moment. There is no why.” (Kurt Vonnegut)
In an era before smart phones a camera is left running at a party so guests can pick it up and film and perform. Presented here largely in slow motion with no sound, the artist uses a few minutes of real time and sound to define heightened clarity within the remembered event.
Digital Video, 1 hour, silent with 3 minutes of sound, looped.
Sadie Tierney is a graduate of the Royal College of Art. Solo exhibitions include Flowers East, Eton College and Rabley Contemporary.
