New acquisition of my work by a major international art gallery.

The Bronx Museum of the Arts, one of New York’s largest public art galleries, has recently secured two of my paintings for their permanent collection. The two paintings ‘Ferry at Night’ and ‘Grand Canyon’ were previously held in a private collection, so this is the first time they will be available for the public to view.

The Bronx Museum of the Arts founded in 1971, is an internationally recognized cultural destination that presents innovative contemporary art exhibitions. More about the museum and program click here.

Printing at Omega Print Workshop

February 11th, 2015

This week I’ve been making prints at Omega Printmakers, an open access print workshop in Portsmouth. The big attraction for me is the Rochat etching press, which is a dream to use. There’s a large Albion press too, and exposure unit/ screen beds.

Arromanches Lithograph

June 5th, 2014

D-Day, 70 years ago today.

Here’s a lithograph I made after I visited Arromanches recently.

Many of these large concrete structures were made in Portsmouth where I live, and towed to France to be used as Mulberry Harbours. “Arrow” was the code name for the port at Arromanches and “Golden” was a reference to the Gold Beach sector.

“Golden Arrow”
28 x 36 cm, hand printed on Somerset Satin paper, in an edition of 15.

Varnishing Day

June 4th, 2014

Historically Varnishing Day was a last chance for artists to view and varnish their work, before the exhibition opened to the public. Turner famously made substantial amendments to his paintings.

I didn’t see anyone modifying their work today, but many participants had turned out to celebrate the occasion. A steel band stopped traffic on Piccadilly to lead the procession to St. James’ Church, where the priest of nearby St. Martin in the Fields preached about prophets, priests and kings and how artists can fit these roles. Impressive that he empathised with another group in this way and called them to be leaders!

There was a real air of excitement back at the Royal Academy for the private view and prize giving. The committee had made a thoughtful and creative hang, and the show looked impressive. I was pleased to spot my print at eye level in Room 1.

The open submission exhibition has been running since 1769. It is held annually at the Royal Academy of Arts in Piccadilly, and is open to the public.

Below are some photographs I took at this year’s Varnishing Day…

The show continues until August 17.
